The Persian Silk Tree is one of the most exotic-looking hardy trees you can grow from seed in the UK. Its elegant, finely divided fernlike foliage folds delicately at night and in rain, giving it an almost tropical character. In midsummer it produces an extraordinary display of fluffy, powder-puff flowers in soft pink and cream, filling the air with a sweet honey fragrance. Fast growing and surprisingly hardy, it thrives in a warm sunny position and free-draining soil, making a stunning focal point in any garden within just a few years of sowing

Growing Instructions

  • Sow February to May indoors with bottom heat — a propagator or warm windowsill at 20–25°C gives the fastest and most reliable germination
  • Scarify and hot soak first — nick or sand the hard seed coat then pour boiling water over seeds and soak for 24–48 hours until they visibly swell and plump up
  • Use free-draining compost — a mix of seed compost with 30–40% perlite or coarse grit works well; sow one seed per small pot at 2–3cm depth
  • Germination takes 7–21 days — one of the faster trees to sprout once properly prepared; if nothing appears after 3 weeks try a fresh soak on remaining seeds
  • Full sun essential after germination — move immediately to the brightest position available; seedlings are vigorous and grow rapidly so pot on as soon as roots fill the pot
  • Grow on for a full season before planting out into a warm, sheltered, sunny position — ideally against a south-facing wall in the UK for best flowering results
