8 Dragon fruit seeds. A pitaya or pitahaya is the fruit of several different cactus species indigenous to the Americas. Pitaya usually refers to fruit of the genus Stenocereus, while pitahaya or dragon fruit refers to fruit of the genus Selenicereus, both in the family Cactaceae.
Dragon fruit needs full sun, so choose a sunny area in your garden or a sunny windowsill that gets at least six hours of sunlight a day. For the soil, choose potting soil that is well-draining (dragon fruits are sensitive to “wet feet,” or consistently wet roots) and rich in organic matter. Cover seeds thinly with soil. Mist them consistently to make sure they are moist at all times. Keep inside a propagator, place in zip lock bag or cover with cling film to keep moisture in. Once they germinate, remove plastic.
