Phoenix roebelenii, with common names of dwarf date palm, pygmy date palm, miniature date palm or robellini palm, is a species of date palm native to southeastern Asia, from southwestern China, northern Laos and northern Vietnam. Phoenix roebelenii is an attractive and popular decorative plant that’s easy to care for. Although it can grow tall, it often remains small, only reaching heights of 3 to 6 feet. Because of its manageable size, it can often be seen in shopping centers and parks, as it thrives both indoors and outside. These palms can be planted in pots or outdoors in the gardens in regions without frost. With some maintenance, your phoenix roebelenii palm will please for years to come.

Growing Instructions

Soak seeds for up to a week changing out the water with fresh water each day. Plant the seeds in a well-draining container filled with an equal amount of moist garden soil and organic potting soil. Poke a small hole in the soil and place the seed with the flattened, root end down and the more elongated end pointing upward. Press soil around the seed. If placing the container in an area receiving full sun, cover the seed with a 1/4-inch layer of soil. If placed in filtered shade, cover the seed with a very thin layer of soil. Check frequently to make sure the seeds are kept moist. The seeds generally take three months to sprout. Water frequently while the palm is small. Keep the soil damp but not wet. After the palm tree grows to a height of several inches, add water when the surface of the soil feels dry. Fertilize your pygmy date palm in the early spring, midsummer and late fall with an organic fertilizer formulated specifically for palms. Mix and apply the fertilizer according to the packaging instructions.

Pygmy Palms thrive in temperatures of 16-29°C. Mist the fronds with warm water without lime, which may stain the leaves. Ensure the potted palm never sits in the water. Instead, place the pot on top of gravel or pebbles in the draining dish. This will supply humidity to the plant. Place your plant out of the direct sun for the best results.
