Growing Instructions
- Sow indoors with bottom heat — a propagator set to 20–25°C gives the best results
- Scarify and soak first — lightly sand the seed coat then soak in hot water for 12–24 hours until seeds visibly swell
- Use very gritty compost — a 50/50 mix of seed compost and perlite or coarse grit is essential; cover seeds with a thin layer of fine grit not compost
- Germination takes 2–4 weeks — keep compost barely moist and don't discard pots for at least 8 weeks as some seeds are slower
- Maximum light after germination — move to the brightest position available and water sparingly, allowing compost to almost dry out between waterings
- Grow on for a full season before planting out into a sunny, very free-draining spot — once established it is drought tolerant and hardy to -15°C
